PBS Classroom Activities 2
4.1.2 Anatomy of the Heart
Anatomy of the heart- The artifact shows internal and external anatomy of the sheep heart. In unit 4 the main objective was to identify the main structures of the heart and describe their functions. Lab was a way to identify the actual parts of the heart and then record each function of the structures. After doing this lab I now know the function of the valves in the heart, the direction of blood flow, and the difference between systemic and pulmonary blood flow that I did not know at the beginning of the year. The strengths of this artifact is that it identifies the different structures that need to be identified but if lacks the function of the different structures, which is a weakness.

3.1.1 Blood Detective- The artifact used is a great way to recognize that a hematocrit is the percent of the volume of whole blood that is composed of red blood cells. In this unit the main focus was blood and its function, shape, and hematocrit. This artifact strongly showed the relationship to hematocrit due to the hematocrit test performed on Anna's blood. After doing this lab I know more about a hematocrit test and how a normal level of hematocrit should be 42-45 percent which I didn't know at the beginning of the year. Anna's blood level was only 31.25 percent which made her anemic because it was lower than normal. The strength of this artifact is the fact that is represents the results of a hematocrit test but it lacks the procedure to preform a hematocrit test.
3.4.2 What is the probability- This artifact is used to follow the objective: explain how pedigrees can be used to determine the mode of inheritance of genetic diseases. This artifact demonstrates how different pedigrees can determine how a child will either be healthy, a carrier, of has a genetic disease. The artifact clearly shows how a person can be either one of the three in genetic inheritance. After doing this lab I know how to read and determine a person's genetic inheritance from a pedigree of two parents that I didn't know at the beginning of the year. This lab is strong in the fact that it demonstrates how a pedigree is used to determines inheritance but lacks different types of diseases a person could have genetically.
5.1.4 Gram staining- This artifact is used to follow the objective: identify the basic structure of a bacterial cell. This artifact illustrates the different components of a bacterial cell and explains the function of each component. The artifact clearly shows the different parts of the bacterial cell and explains how the structures function to keep the bacteria at bay. After doing this lab I know the different structures of a bacterial cell and how they function in the bacteria, which I didn't know at the beginning of the year. This lab is strong in illustrating the different structures of a bacteria and explaining them but lacks how a bacterial cell differs from other types of cells in a organism.
